David Noble, CIPS CEOIt’s been enlightening to read your comments during the consultation period for Chartered Membership. There have been some assumptions in some key areas that need clarification. One is around the learning and experience required to achieve Chartered Member status. I stress that no one should be expected to repeat any learning and that’s why there are three routes proposed:

• Academic – which includes CIPS accredited postgraduate degree programmes, aligned to the Chartered Member standard and the CIPS Executive Diploma.

• An experiential route, which will be assessing experience and achievement to postgraduate degree standard and will be aligned with the CIPS standards at this level.

• Masters level practioner programmes – 
The CIPS Master Practitioner (Corporate Award Programme).

It is proposed that each route be subject to an interview against the CIPS standards to ensure that it is equitable. Members will be invited to vote and we are collating feedback via as many networks as we can reach. CIPS still values MCIPS as the ‘professional licence’. However, there are increasing expectations on procurement professionals so we are hoping to introduce this additional grade in line with many other professional institutes.

CIPS has been very careful in its discussions with Privy Council and various parties over the Chartered Member title, so the professional licence is clearly stated with the status of MCIPS reinforced. The key differentiators are:

MCIPS:  

• Honours degree equivalent plus three years relevant experience.  

• CPD and the Ethical Procurement and Supply e-learning and test are optional and not mandated.

Chartered Members: Entry to Chartered Member is as follows: MCIPS or FCIPS plus 
a satisfactorily completed online Ethical Procurement and Supply Test.

• Either/or (i) Hold a CIPS accredited postgraduate degree (diploma) or a CIPS Executive Diploma, or a Master Practioner programme, plus three years post-nominal.

(ii) Demonstrate equivalent Masters level experience and achievement aligned with the Chartered Member standard and five years post-nominal experience.

• Maintenance of the Chartered Member grade is through mandatory CPD and annually undertaking the Ethical Procurement and Supply Test.

Chartered Member is optional for those who wish to be recognised as postgraduate degree level with experience. Please read the brochure emailed to members,
