Achieving FCIPS transformed Rachael Bah as a leader, inspiring her to lead an event for procurement professionals in Asia.
Rachael’s journey to FCIPS has been the making of her career and has inspired her to not only lead procurement but raise up others around her.
Known for her positive attitude, she balances driving the profession with supporting and empowering her team. And, over the course of her career, has worked her way up from roles in inventory, supply chain, commercial, and procurement to her current position as APAC head of procurement at GWS EA.
Today, Rachael excels in delivering value for clients internal and external, with a big focus on ESG results, fostering team collaboration, employee growth, and building a diverse culture. For her, procurement is more than just value creation, it’s about people and helping them thrive.
We spoke to Rachael about her FCIPS journey and what achieving chartered status means to her.
Why did you want to achieve FCIPS?
Achieving fellowship was an ambition of Rachael’s for years, which she knew would elevate her career.
“FCIPS is the highest level of achievement in procurement and supply, and is a testament to one's dedication, expertise, and leadership in the profession,” she says.
She adds that fellowship signifies a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical standards, and excellence in practice. And that achieving FCIPS enabled her to participate in more thought leadership sessions and influence the advancement of the profession.
“I have met some amazing peers through this membership,” says Rachael.
What big learnings have you taken from your journey to FCIPS?
“My journey to FCIPS has been nothing short of transformative, filled with profound self-reflection and invaluable learnings,” says Rachael.
A steep learning curve, Rachael’s route to fellowship would prove educational and nurturing but also fun.
“I received positive feedback on my functional skills and my focus on people, though it seems my comedic talents won't be earning me a side gig anytime soon – I think I saw some tumbleweed for one of my jokes!”
She adds that the sponsors who supported her FCIPS journey and mentored her were instrumental in her growth, both functionally and personally.
“They helped me expand my network, for which I will always be deeply appreciative.”
How has FCIPS benefited you professionally?
Achieving FCIPS has expanded Rachael’s knowledge and helped her to network.
“It’s provided me with invaluable insights and opportunities to connect with industry leaders. It's also enabled me to contribute meaningfully to the field and stay ahead of the curve,” she says.
Rachael’s journey to FCIPS led to her joining the CIPS Pan Asean Region group (a branch dedicated to procurement and supply professionals in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand) and leading an event off the back of it. The group has helped her give back to the community.
What advice would you give to those with MCIPS who are thinking of applying for FCIPS?
“Just go for it! FCIPS is a testament to your dedication, expertise, and leadership and you only stand to gain from it,” says Rachael.
“You'll meet some incredible people and grow both professionally and personally,” she adds, recalling her journey and the pride it’s filled her with.
Rather than go it on your own, Rachael recommends teaming up with FCIPS sponsors. “They’ll guide you on this rewarding journey to achieve FCIPS.”
