Joanne Kennett

Senior Manager, Inclusion & Diversity

Group Procurement & Partnerships Westpac

What’s the biggest challenge you have faced as a woman in business to date?

Working in a male-dominated companies and being taken seriously.

Who has inspired you (male or female)?

It’s hard to pick one as many people have inspired me during my career. More recently, those people who work for social enterprises and dedicate their life to helping others while building a business; they never give up.

What do you wish you’d known when you started out and/ or what advice would you give your younger self?

That it’s ok not to have a career path planned out, that part of the adventure is discovery and it opens you up to so many opportunities.

What are the character traits of successful women and/ or what do you think makes a good leader?

Compassion, empathy and treating everyone as if they are important. Great leaders understand that wisdom comes from everywhere, not just consultants, books and people more senior to them.

Do you have a favourite quote or statement that sums up your approach to life?

Feel the fear and do it anyway!

What do you #ChooseToChallenge?

I choose to challenge the barriers we all put up to maintain the privilege of the few, even those that we don’t know we’re supporting. Think about what we consider as normal and how it keeps inclusion and diversity from flourishing.
