Businesses not only have a responsibility to respect and value all forms of difference and characteristics including race and ethnicity, culture and belief, gender and sexuality, age and social status and ability. There is also a huge business advantage to be had: diverse teams are more innovative, but also people want to be part of them and stay part of them.


CIPS Tools:

  1. The cultural dimensions model outlines the different dimensions that may feature when embracing supplier diversity. It is important as a procurement professional to understand the different styles, views and ways of working that may present themselves when being inclusive of a diverse range of suppliers. In some cultures for example roles are gender defined or the organisation may have a strict hierarchy whereas others may promote a gender overlap in roles and have a view that everyone regardless of their position in the company should be treated equally. When promoting supplier diversity the procurement professional should not judge but embrace the differences, as long as there are not ethical  concerns and take the positives to create and add value to their own supply chain  and its management. The overall message of this model is that by combining different aspects of culture positive outputs can be achieved.

  3. This web of culture model shows how cultures are often formed. They can be created through routines, through stories or through power and hierarchy. By understanding how an organisation’s culture was formed a procurement professional will be better placed to engage with that organisation and form a strategic  relationship with them. This diagram can help a procurement professional to understand why there may be resistance in their organisation or within their supply chain. Resistance to work with certain people or some suppliers may be generated from stories or rumours from the past. By understanding where the resistance comes from, the buyer should be able to help break it down and develop a relationship of inclusion with their colleagues and suppliers.
