You might have thought about the supply chain, logistics and project management aspects of the London Olympics – and now, for sports enthusiasts, there’s a chance to do the same again – only with snow and ice, in Eastern Europe! An article by Wasp Barcode Technologies on ‘Supply Chain Digital’ (5 Feb 2014) highlights a little-talked-about aspect of a major sporting event: ‘the cost and manpower spent hauling all of the Olympic equipment and goods to the games. From a logistical standpoint, the Winter Olympics is one of the largest freight and shipping nightmares to happen on a global scale.’
This would make a great logistical problem-solving case study. You might like to analyse what the challenges are; how the processes might be risk-managed; what KPIs might be set for the project logistics function; and what logistics structures (eg distribution centres) and resources (eg 4PL) might be used.
