In today's increasingly competitive employment market and within the context of a continuing procurement skills shortage, is it better to develop your own talent in house or to recruit new staff? The simple is 'yes' to both and this is borne out by our our CIPS/Hays Salary and Insights Guide 2018 which will launch in May. Here are a few tasters from the report:

• For the first time since we began reporting, we have seen a decrease in the number of employers looking to hire new procurement staff in the next 12 months

• 56% of procurement specialists with responsibility for recruitment stated that they struggled to find the right procurement talent in the last 12 months, 5% more than in 2017

• More employers than ever stated that competition from other employers was the biggest barrier to recruiting new procurement professionals in 2018. A compelling reason for organisations to invest in talent retention strategies, building their teams from within and succession planning

• In terms of benefits being offered to procurement people, study/career development saw a large increase from 30% to 43%. This demonstrates an increased focus on investment in the future of the procurement profession through training and qualifications programmes such as from CIPS to help retain talent.

CIPS joins International Ethics Standards Coalition

CIPS has joined a new international coalition that has developed the first set of globally recognised ethics standards for real estate, the built environment and related professional organisations.

The International Ethics Standards (IES) Coalition currently consists of over 120 member organisations with professionals working in a diverse range of countries.

Coalition members, many of which have their own codes of conduct focusing on qualities such as trustworthiness, integrity and respect, will work together to align ethics principles through a new international standard. MORE

CIPS announces name change…

As part of our efforts to encourage businesses and public sector organisations to improve their procurement processes, we are re-launching one of our services under a new name. The service is a comprehensive assessment of an organisation's procurement and supplier management procedures, which highlights where improvements and efficiencies can be made. Formerly known as CIPS Corporate Certification, from now on the service will be called the CIPS Procurement Excellence Programme.

Andrew Coulcher, CIPS Group Knowledge and Membership Director, explains: “The name has been changed to better reflect the goal of companies embarking on this process – to achieve procurement excellence – and to better reflect the process itself – which is a programme of learning and making improvements. We believe the new name is also better understood by the governments, international agencies and corporate organisations we work with globally, 300 of which have already been through the programme.”

“At the same time as reconsidering the name, we have reviewed and updated the assessment process for the Procurement Excellence Programme to ensure it is as relevant and up-to-date as possible.”

Customers that have already embarked on a programme and not yet completed, will continue under the Corporate Certification process, with the chance to move on to the new programme at their re-assessment.
