A successful career in procurement and supply

Becoming MCIPS

Most employers are demanding MCIPS qualified professionals or those studying towards it. Qualifications and the professional recognition is signified by MCIPS after your name bringing credibility to your career and confidence to employers.

Beyond MCIPS

A higher-level status than MCIPS, Chartered Status individuals are qualified up to postgraduate degree level. Professionals who hold this status are the most sought-after talent and are those who will challenge the profession to take it beyond its current boundaries to an advanced professional level.

The different approaches you can take into the profession and expected exit competencies are shown in this diagram.

A few points to remember when you're looking at the diagram:

  • You don't have to follow one pathway, such as all CIPS qualifications; as long as you complete a qualification or its equivalent you can change your progression pathway.
  • If you want to pursue CIPS qualifications you can start at Certificate, Advanced Certificate or Diploma. To enter at Diploma level you need to have at least two A levels or equivalent or two years' experience in a business environment.
  • If you're already progressing your career and are now looking for professional recognition or qualifications, you can join the pathway at the appropriate level for you.
  • Generally it takes up to one year to complete the CIPS Diploma qualifications, the Certificate qualifications can be completed more quickly. Depending on your particular circumstances it may take more or less time.

A corporate programme as a route to MCIPS CIPS Corporate Award is a practical, accredited and applied training programme that is contextualised to your business, allowing you to develop your procurement team's skills and see learning directly and immediately applied in your workplace.

BTECS and Apprenticeships

In parts of the UK there are currently CIPS-accredited procurement and supply units in several BTEC qualifications and Apprenticeship schemes, so if you’re looking to grown your team find out more how you can give young talent a chance. Find out more.

Becoming a CIPS Fellow is the pinnacle of procurement achievement. Our Fellows of the Future porgramme was launched two years ago to ensure that we futureproof the growth and reach of our profession by identify, nurture and encourage our future leaders now.

The programme has been well supported and we are now looking to formalise the programme which will see us accept 50 new candidates every January, beginning in 2017. We will be launching a campaign calling for applications on 1 November so please look out for it if you:

  • Have been MCIPS for 3 years and are a current member of CIPS
  • Are at least Managerial level as detailed in the CIPS Global Standard
  • Have line manager approval and support as time off will be required to attend day events

Is category management the key to greater strategic value and growth for businesses?

Interesting findings from the CIPS Resilience Survey

Procurement is at the forefront of managing risk in the supply chain, but should we now being talking about resilient supply chains, and not about risk alone?

The findings of the CIPS Resilience Survey conducted in the summer, found that a large proportion of the procurement community were unclear about what resilience actually is:

  • 64% said resilience was risk and business continuity, only
  • 56% said they were unable to conduct a cost benefit analysis of a risk incident amongst suppliers
  • 47% believed that asking for a business continuity plan was sufficient to understand risk amongst suppliers
  • Almost 52% expected the same level of service from suppliers in the event of a disruption

As supply chains are becoming incredibly complex and threatened by a range of possible outcomes, there is more operational and regulatory risk than ever before. An incident, unplanned for and uncosted, can be a shock for businesses who need to start thinking more about the resilience of their crucial supply chains.

Insights for procurement people looking to capitalise on mobile technologies

Challenges for procurement

  • There are huge concerns about data security, cloud storage, and cross-border and government-led snooping.
  • Securing data relating to purchases, spend, tenders and invoices can be secured behind the corporate firewall but this may also make it inaccessible to legitimate users outside the firewall.
  • Too restrictive a data policy can result in the failure of 'bring your own device' schemes which are being adopted by many companies.
  • Mobile devices may be well suited to switching between games, media or social networks, but they are not currently adept at the 'multi-tasking' (shuttling data between documents) required in business.
  • Remember… "It remains to be seen whether truly mobile-enabled procurement technology can be a catalyst for a wider corporate information system migration in its own right, but in the years to come, any business system that does not explicitly include mobile operation in its architecture will begin to lose traction in the market."
