Wigan Council is an amazing place to work, winning Council of the Year 3 times across Public Sector Awards in the last 5 years. We have a culture that fosters positivity, courage, accountability, and kindness, rooted in asset-based ways of working, that make a difference for our residents.

Our Borough is made up of a collection of 14 brilliant towns making one great place to live, work and visit. Our residents are proud of the strong towns we have created together along with historic villages and a wealth of green spaces our borough has to offer.

We are at an incredibly exciting time here in Wigan as we embark on a bold New Era with our residents, communities and businesses. Progress with Unity is a new movement for change for the decade ahead built around our unique way of working with a commitment to two emerging missions:

Create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses by breaking down the barriers that create financial, health, education and environmental inequalities in our borough Make all our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them as a genuine partnership with our residents and businesses, who know our communities best, we will help each town and village in the borough to celebrate and maintain their identity whilst understanding and helping to achieve what is needed to thrive.

To support and drive our mission forward we are in the early stages of harnessing the significant power of Public Sector Procurement and unlocking the key role that public spending through an innovative, progressive procurement support service can play in building more social, economic and environmental benefit for our Borough.

In this new leadership position, you will play a key role in the organisation, developing and embedding forward thinking procurement practice across the diverse range of commissioning and contractual opportunities across the Council. You will lead on the translation and implementation of the Procurement Act 2024, making the most of the opportunities that the new legislation brings for our Borough, driving forward the strategic missions of the Council through every procurement and commissioning opportunity. You will work in an environment that welcomes and actively encourages innovation the role will be further shaped around your expertise, passion and skill mix within the broader leadership team.

We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home (My Place), the office (Our Place) or the community (Your Place). We like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits click here to find out more about working for #TeamWigan.

Wigan Council prides itself on equality, inclusion and promoting diversity within the borough and aims to recruit a workforce that reflects our diverse communities. We welcome applications from everybody in the community and would particularly encourage applicants from our underrepresented groups to apply. At Wigan, it is really important to us that applicants demonstrate our Team Wigan behaviours, and we do all we can to make sure that everyone feels like they belong. We have guidance in place to ensure that all applicants are treated fairly and consistently at every stage of the recruitment process.
