The main syllabus changes

  • Updated language to make it more global and relevant for the profession.
  • L5M1 Managing Teams & Individuals, we’ve reduced the number of learning outcomes to four. Find out more about this exam for November 2024.
  • L5M4 Advanced Contract & Financial Management, you’ll find new content about the calculation and evaluation of performance measures.
  • We’ve included Environmental, Social & Governance known as ESG to encompass commitment to the wider sustainability agenda.
  • Created a more improved running order to support teaching and learning of all topics.

From March 2025 exams onwards, all exams questions will be on the updated syllabus.

We’ve refreshed the content in our core module resources to reflect the updated syllabus changes.

The content has been refocused to address global, emerging key themes in our profession. You will discover more globally focused learning content with relevant examples.

New sections on Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) have been added, providing you with a broader understanding of the wider sustainability agenda.

We’ve also numbered indicative content sections, making it easier for you find the material you need to know and understand for your exams.

We used more consistent language throughout the core modules surrounding the key themes. This will strengthen your understanding of other sectors and industries, enabling you to thrive in any professional setting.

The glossary section in the core modules have been revised, updated and aligned with the syllabus. These adjustments aim to enhance your reading and learning experience.

All of this along with a fresh new look.

 

Frequently asked questions

Will any of the Level 5 Advanced Diploma exams change before March 2025?

You can use our existing and new study materials to prepare for November 2024 exams. In this series L5M1 Managing Teams & Individuals will be reduced to 4 questions.

You won’t be asked questions on the updated syllabus, or any content removed from the current syllabus in this exam. 

The exam will consist of 4 questions, each worth 25 marks.

  • Question 1 will be based on learning outcome 1. 
  • Question 2 will be based on learning outcome 2. 
  • Question 3 will be based on learning outcome 3. 

All other exams will continue to have the same number of questions as in previous exam series. See our sample questions and answers for each module online.

What have you changed in the updated syllabus?

Taking input from our stakeholders including learners, tutors and current best practice we have enhanced our syllabus. In response to the evolving global environment, these enhancements reflect the growing emphasis on sustainability. These updates spotlight ESG (environmental, social, and governance) principles alongside considerations for equality, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I).

We’ve modified some of the learning outcomes and refined the indicative content to align with these widely renowned principles.

What content will be removed from the syllabus?

The content removed from the current syllabus won't be included in the November 2024 exam. If you’d like specifics on which topics are being excluded, we recommend reading each syllabus and comparing the content. 

When will the updated syllabus be made available?

When will the new learning resources be available to buy?

The new study resources are available to buy online now. You’ll be able to use them to prepare for all exams straight away.

Remember to read the correct syllabus, you will continue to be examined on the current syllabus until November 2024. Then exam questions will be on the updated syllabus in March 2025 exams onwards

What if I have already bought my study resources – when will I need the new resources?

If you've already purchased your study resources, you can continue to use them to prepare for November 2024 exam series. However, starting from the March 2025 exam series onwards, you should transition to the new core learning resources for exam preparation. Because we have not updated the syllabus content in the elective modules, this means you will not need to replace the elective modules study resources.

Should you choose to stick with the current resources for the core modules, we recommend using CIPS Intelligence Hub. After the November exams, topic links in the Hub will be updated to align with the updated core syllabus. This will assist you in addressing any potential gaps in your previous versions of the study guides.

We remind you that you must expect to do wider reading and your own research when preparing for all CIPS exams.

Will there be the same number of exams in the updated CIPS Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Procurement and Supply?

Yes, the format and number of exams will remain the same.

For L5M1 Managing Teams & Individuals, we’ve reduced the number of exam questions to four. The number of questions in all other modules will remain the same.

Does this syllabus update apply to Level 6 Professional Diploma in Procurement and Supply?

Not at this time. You can continue with confidence on your journey to becoming MCIPS Chartered. We are currently reviewing the timelines for Level 6 Professional Diploma in Procurement & Supply and they will be announced when we have them confirmed. We will advise you of any syllabus and learning resources changes well in advance, giving you lots of notice to prepare.

If I fail an exam in November 2024, will I need to buy new learning resources to prepare for the same module in March 2025?

Yes, we strongly recommend that you buy the new learning resources before the March 2025 exams. Using the most up-to-date learning resources can help you achieve success when preparing for exams.

All of our resources are created by subject experts approved by CIPS. We remind you that you must expect to do wider reading and your own research when preparing for exams. This can include the content in CIPS Intelligence Hub.

During January 2025 we’ll invite all studying members to a live webinar where we will outline the updated syllabus and how this has impacted the various study materials. These have been hugely successful in the past with thousands of learners joining us from around the world.
