Job Details

AWE is looking for a Principal Contract Manager to lead one of our largest and complex infrastructure projects. Providing post award commercial and contract performance leadership to the Project Director to enable effective management of project and commercial risk. The role will be embedded in the Infrastructure Project Delivery function and work in a matrix team environment to ensure contract objectives are achieved. The multi-billion project is essential to the UK's national security and will design, construct and commission a new world class engineering facility. The project will be delivered through a new contract partnership, with joint incentivisation and business transformation agenda.

Location - Reading / Basingstoke Area

Salary: up to £85k (Dependent on experience)

As Principal Contract Manager you will be responsible to the Programme Partnership Board for the overall delivery of the programme commercial strategy, ensuring the Partnership delivers an effective value and risk management strategy. You will lead a post award team to control the partner's cost, performance and resource management profiles to successfully achieve the programme's strategic outcomes.

To be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate some of the following:

  • MCIPS, MRICS or APM Project Management or equivalent experience (desirable)

  • Experience of delivering Value, Risk and Performance Management in a strategic contract or alliance partnership

  • Experience in driving high performance using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and incentivisation models

  • Experience in using earned value management (EVM) techniques to deliver efficiencies and improve contract performance

  • Proactive self-starter and willing to challenge the status quo and meet the resistance head on

  • Can lead, manage and direct a mix of internal and external resources to deliver the programme

  • Experience of delivering large, complex NEC based construction contracts with major UK contractors

  • Ability to manage design process to a budget within client constraints

  • Experience of working in a matrix organisation and interfacing with multiple internal and external stakeholders

  • Able to articulate decisions and strategy and support with the why and context to bring the decision to life

  • In-depth knowledge of supplier selection and negotiate complex contracts with suppliers and ensuring risk is apportioned appropriately between the parties

  • Understand pre and post contract activities and what good governance looks like

  • Familiar with construction standard forms of contract

  • Understand the wider engineering market and the AWE's position and influence to create capacity and capability through effective demand planning

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the security clearance required for the role
