Armed with Uber-style apps, start-ups aim to revolutionise the global haulage industry

Whether the world’s lucrative but fragmented haulage industry is ready or not, Uber-style apps are poised to transform the business. 

The haulage industry is worth £440bn in the US, and £250bn in the EU, but trucks in the US and UK travel empty about a quarter of the time. As Drew McElroy, co-founder of app Transfix, says: “Every year in the US, trucks drive enough empty miles to reach Mars 350 times.”
