Focus on supply management

19 January 2018

That was the advice given to delegates at the inaugural meeting of the CIPS Romania Network

Supply management will be a better fit for 2020 than purchasing or procurement skills, said Robert Semethy, CPO of Erste Group Bank, addressing a group of 140 procurement professionals in Bucharest.

He predicted that tactical and operational roles in supply management will disappear and be replaced by AI, and that the profession will start to make significant headway in accounts-payable automation, using technologies such as blockchain. Most supply chain departments have been digital for years, he said, but usage and user experience will be enhanced and supply management will become the organisation’s “data centre of excellence”.

Be proactive around risk management and sustainability too as these areas will grow in importance for supply professionals, he said. Professionals would need to focus on developing their soft skills to effectively build bridges with the rest of the business, he added.

“Supply management already has a seat at the table,” he said. “We must exploit our position to provide enhanced value to the business.”

The CIPS Romania Network is chaired by Mildred Matesan, until recently strategy and sourcing development manager at Ericsson, and the event was sponsored by oil company KMG International.

“The atmosphere was engaging, discussions were interactive and there was a great deal of networking and electricity in the air,” Matesan said of the event.

“We are working with CIPS to build this network into a viable branch that will provide an environment to network, benchmark, exchange best in class sourcing practices and hear leaders share their experiences and stories.”

The next Romanian network’s event will be in April 2018.
