Procurement analyst Ashleigh Turner of Hastings Deering won the CIPS Australasia Young Talent Award 2019. Here’s what she’s learned so far about success in procurement and using adversity to your advantage.
Don’t worry about technical skills and knowledge
These are things you can learn. What you really require are soft skills: leadership, communication, relationship and stakeholder management, negotiation and influencing. Procurement is all about people – understanding their desires and objectives, as well as how to motivate and influence them.
Adversity is our greatest strength
It’s proof we can survive anything. It should empower us to be better and do better. Adversity is the one thing that we all have in common, and that may be in our personal or professional lives.
Embrace young talent
We are in a technologically advanced era where entrepreneurship is an asset; let’s embrace that. Millennials will be taking us into the future (50% of the workforce will be millennials in 2021) so we need to work with them to set ourselves up for success. Companies say it’s hard to get young talent, yet continue to advertise jobs with 7+ years’ experience in procurement as essential. Experience shouldn’t just mean time, but knowledge or skills applied to achieve an outcome.
