Tourists’ pursuit of the perfect selfie is causing thousands of euros of damage in the Netherlands.
The problem of trampled flowers has become so bad that farmers have been forced to put up signs, warning people off their land.
Flowers are crucial to the Netherlands economy, accounting for 10% of the country’s gross national product. Royal Flora Holland, one of the country’s leading conglomerates of florists, enjoyed a total turnover of more than €4.6bn in 2018, of which €2.6bn came from cut flowers.
