The newly opened Beijing’s Daxing International Airport will ultimately handle passenger volumes of up to 100 million, making it the largest airport in the world. The $11.7bn building is starfish-shaped to minimise walking distance for passengers – the longest walk within the airport is eight minutes. Daxing will have capacity for 45 million passengers by 2021, rising to 72 million in 2025 and 100 million in 2040. With four runways, the 700,000 square metre terminal features new technology including intelligent robotic parking, baggage tracking, facial recognition and next generation robots.
