Ann Marie Cawkwell has been appointed to head Thompson Plastics' newly created group purchasing department. She will take on overall management of the whole group's buying process, consolidating teams in several locations in the UK.

"At Thompson Plastics there are real opportunities for building more effective working partnerships with suppliers to the benefit of the group's operations and customers," she said. "We are now operating in a demanding global environment and must communicate our expectations, and those of our customers, to our supply partners."

She is starting by meeting suppliers, setting up a vendor management inventory system and targeting reduced lead times and lower costs from a reorganised supply base. She says that purchasing is exciting because "no two days are alike".

Thompson has a turnover of £35 million, after evolving from a single-process supplier to a multi-process provider producing parts for vehicles, sanitary wear, the leisure and industrial products industries.

Cawkwell joined the Hull headquarters of the plastics engineering group in April, moving from Donaldson's Filtration Components, where she had been the purchasing manager for three years.

She has spent 21 years working in procurement. Previous employers include Air Products UK, Sara Lee and British Gas, where she started out at the age of 17.

She became a member of CIPS five years ago, and has a degree in business management.
