Food purchasers join Subway's buying firm

Former buyers from Safeway, McDonald's and Pizza Hut have joined European Independent Purchasing Company (EIPC), which manages procurement for sandwich chain Subway.

Steve Fitzsimmons has been appointed purchasing manager for equipment, non-food products and services.

He previously worked in food service procurement and project management at Safeway Stores, dealing with customer restaurants, staff facilities and food-to-go.

Dominique Billes has been made regional supply chain manager for France, Spain and the Netherlands. She will also be responsible for bakery and redistribution across Europe.

Billes has 25 years' experience in purchasing and supply chain management in fast-food restaurants. Prior to joining EIPC she worked for the Independent Purchasing Co-operative, EIPC's equivalent in the US and Canada.

Before that, Billes was international purchasing and supply chain director for McDonald's.

Ben Fricke joins from Yum! Restaurants International, which included work for Pizza Hut and KFC. He is regional supply chain manager responsible for implementing global and regional product contracts.

By 2010, the EIPC believes it will be responsible for purchases in excess of ?400 million annually and manage a supply chain that extends across 19 countries.

Subway recently opened its 1,000th store in Europe.
