'Customer of choice' crucial

Most buyers want to become the "customer of choice" among their suppliers, the latest SM poll has revealed.

In the survey of 100 purchasers, 72 per cent said it was a priority they became the preferred buyer with their vendors, while the rest felt it wasn't necessary.

It follows comments from Paul Alexander, head of procurement at British Airways. He said because of economic turbulence, buyers with limited vendors for certain goods and services should "get the supplier to internalise you as the 'customer of choice'." (Features, 28 February).

Those respondents who disagreed said suppliers prioritise contracts by price, rather than favouring certain customers.
