Best practice is not 'one size fits all'

Best practice should be applied within the context of what customers and stakeholders are looking to achieve rather than in a one-size fits all fashion, according to a senior buyer at Novartis.

In an interview published in the latest edition of Supply Business, Chris Holmes, head of supplier performance and innovation at the pharmaceutical company, highlighted the importance of taking account of customers individual needs.

He told SB: “People can get very hung up on best practice, but you can’t just pick it up, apply it elsewhere and expect it to work, and work in the same way, so we’re pushing category teams to understand their customers’ needs first.”

The procurement function at Novartis has been tasked with saving $4 billion (£2.5 billion) over four years, to make up for lost revenues from drugs that are coming off patent.
