Surrey County Council spent £470 million on contracts with local businesses in 2014, 54 per cent of the council’s total spend.
Four years ago just over a third of the council’s total spend was with local firms. A series of online initiatives such as the BuildSurrey website have been set up to make it easier for firms to do business with the council.
This time last year more than 700 firms had registered and contracts worth more than £8 million had been channelled through the website.
A drive to create apprenticeships has so far filled 1,500 roles through various schemes run by the council.
One of these, which has created 200 roles, is run by procurement by making the creation of these positions a condition of securing contracts with the authority.
