10 steps to put procurement at the heart of your business

CIPS president Richard Masser provides 10 ways to achieve the core theme of his CIPS presidency.

1. Undertake training and development to gain skills, and continuous professional development to stay current.

2. Ensure you have a thorough understanding of corporate objectives and participate in setting your own aligned objectives

3. Commit to ambitious but deliverable targets that push you out of your comfort zone.

4. Have confidence in your ability to deliver against those targets.

5. Proactively make the highest level of management aware of the value you intend to deliver before you deliver it in order to be seen as a strategic enabler (rather than someone who just got lucky).

6. Make planning central to everything you do – if you fail to plan you are planning to fail. It’s a well-known concept but is so often overlooked.

7. Share success and recognition for the added value that procurement brings, but embrace failure too and learn from it to avoid recurrence.

8. Apply lean thinking to your organisation, whatever sector you’re operating in.

9. Recognise that noise doesn’t always mean knowledge or know-how – respect and listen to the quiet ones too – they have a great deal to offer.

10. Create tangible value to enable procurement to sit at the heart of your business.
