Siam City Cement (SCCC) has clinched the title of overall winner in the CIPS Asia Supply Management Awards.
The cream of the procurement profession gathered for a ceremony at the Amara Sanctuary in Singapore to celebrate the best of the best.
SCCC, who also picked up Best People Development Initiative and Most Innovative Use of Technology, spends over $700m each year with more than 2,000 suppliers.
The company, the second biggest cement firm in Thailand, began a three-year transformation programme in 2015 after an assessment in 2014 uncovered capability gaps in the procurement function.
A procurement academy was established to drive training and improvement and it has increased skills, reduced staff turnover and raised the profile of purchasing. The work has seen SCCC’s benefit saving rate increase from 2% in 2014 to 6.1% in 2016.
Meanwhile, the implementation of new ERP and sourcing systems helped it notch up benefits worth $2.6m in 2016 through e-auctions.
In 2017 SCCC completed acquisitions of cement businesses in Thailand, Bangladesh and the fast-growing markets of Sri Lanka and South Vietnam, which command leading positions in their respective markets.
SCCC said the total cost of the acquisitions was around 33bn baht and would make the company one of the leading regional cement players in South East Asian emerging markets.
The company’s total cement capacity was set to increase from 14.8m tonnes to 26.5m tonnes as a result of the acquisitions.
The awards ceremony formed part of the ProcureCon Asia conference.
