Cyclone sends Madagascan vanilla prices soaring

A major cyclone in Madagascar, crime and market speculation have driven the price of vanilla to record highs, causing price hikes across the world.

More than three-quarters of the world’s vanilla fields are located on Madagascar and this year, the island nation is set to produce 80% of the world’s vanilla, according to US vanilla manufacturer Nielsen Massey’s Spring 2017 crop report.
