China’s regional governments should stop blaming outside influences and take more responsibility for local pollution, according to a senior environmental official.
China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) said while the country’s overall air pollution fell last month after a factory crackdown in the northern regions, concentrations of the small, breathable particles known as PM2.5 surged 20% in the Yangtze delta in eastern China, which includes Shanghai and the manufacturing province of Jiangsu.
