Walmart suppliers reduced their emissions by more than 20m tonnes last year, the firm has said.

In its latest global responsibility report, the retailer said more than 400 suppliers had signed up to its programme to reduce supply chain emissions in its first year, and already more than 200 had reported reductions.

Walmart aims to reduce its supply chain emissions by one gigaton by 2030 through Project Gigaton.

Kathleen McLaughlin, president of the Walmart Foundation and chief sustainability officer for Walmart, said the company wanted to transform retail supply chains for “economic, environmental and social sustainability”.

“Through our initiatives, we hope to accelerate progress and spark collective action on the issues that matter most to our customers, business and communities,” she said.

The firm’s report also said:

  • Renewables accounted for 28% of Walmart’s power use, putting it on track to meet its target of 50% by 2025.
  • The Walmart Foundation was training more than than 1m small and medium scale farmers, more than half of whom were women.
  • All of the wild caught fish and 98% of farmed fish sold by Walmart and Sam’s Club were certified.

  • Walmart had diverted 78% of its global waste from landfill.
  • Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have invested $80m in the Retail Opportunity Initiative to help frontline workers to advance their careers in retail or adjacent sectors.
