Dubai Media Office (DMO) blamed “countries known for hostile orientations to the UAE and Saudi Arabia” for a social media campaign that questioned the authenticity of UAE products.

In a series of tweets, the DMO there had been a “systematic smear campaign” against Emirati products which “echoed a group of lies” about a lack of controls and follow-up on goods manufactured in the Jebel Ali Free Zone.

It said: “Jebel Ali and all the free zones in the Emirates are subject to the control and follow-up of the UAE authorities”.

It added all products made in the UAE must adhere to standards set by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology, a globally-accredited standardisation body.

While some reports had suggested the campaign was propagated by Saudi activists, the DMO dismissed the claims.

It said data revealed the people who issued the campaign “are social media users from outside Saudi Arabia and from countries known for their hostile orientations to the UAE and Saudi Arabia” in a bid to create trade tensions between the two countries.

“In response to the allegations that are trying to offend the relations between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, especially in the commercial field, our slogan in the Emirates is clear about what harms Saudi Arabia and its people harms us as Emiratis and what is issued to Saudi Arabia is in accordance with common specifications,” it continued.

The Jebel Ali Free Zone includes 7,500 firms from around the world, including 529 food manufacturers such as Nestlé, Mars and Master Baker.

“More than 130 countries around the world use food products manufactured in the Jebel Ali Free Zone, and this is an international testimony of their quality, safety, and conformity to specifications in those countries,” the DMO continued.
