More than 100 UK food sector organisations including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda have pledged to halve food waste by 2030.

Firms signed up to the pledge following the Step Up to the Plate  event last month at London’s Victoria Albert Museum, where organisations were asked take action on measuring and reducing food waste.

Approximately 10.2m tonnes of food and drink is wasted annually from the farm gate, according to a 2018 report by WRAP.

Stefano Agostini, chief executive officer, Nestlé UK & Ireland, said: “Food waste is a critical issue, from an environmental and social perspective and one where we all have a role to play.

“It is crucially important that we work together to help reduce food waste across our own operations, our supply chains and also support consumers to reduce food waste in the home.”

Other signatories include Aldi, Caffé Nero, Co-op, Costa, FDF, Lidl, Starbucks, M&S, Morrisons, Nestlé, Ocado, Unilever and Waitrose.

Environment secretary Michael Gove said: “I am delighted to see so many UK food businesses commit to game-changing action to cut food waste, and I hope that others follow suit. The UK is showing real leadership in this area, but each year millions of tonnes of food is wasted.”

Judith Batchelar, director of Sainsbury’s brand, said: “By working collaboratively with others, from suppliers through to fellow retailers, we can work to eliminate surplus waste within every part of the supply chain process and achieve the impact that we all want to see.”

This is part of wider efforts by the government to reduce the food waste across the supply chain in the UK, including a £4.2m government contract awarded to four organisations to find solutions to redistribute and recycle food waste from the industry.
