Colgate-Palmolive has topped Gartner’s annual Supply Chain Top 25 for the first time, while Unilever is promoted to the “masters” category.
Colgate-Palmolive was followed by Inditex, Nestlé, PepsiCo and Cisco Systems to complete the top five, in Gartner’s 15th annual supply chain ranking.
Mike Griswold, vice president, analyst at Gartner, said: “Colgate-Palmolive’s strong financial performance, combined with its focus on an aligned organisation and impressive work in corporate social responsibility, helped drive the move up from the fourth position in 2018 to the top spot in 2019.
“The company is focused on building a business-first mindset enabled by new technologies, enhanced decision-making and leadership capabilities.”
New entrants to the top 25 included Chinese e-commerce company, Alibaba, and Dutch chemical company, Akzo Nobel.
The businesses on the list are ranked based on a combination of business performance and analysis of leadership and potential.
According to Gartner, key trends which the leading companies have excelled at include personalisation at scale, cooperation with the wider ecosystem and driving business-led digital strategies, including automation and augmentation.
Meanwhile, Unilever joined Apple, P&G, Amazon and McDonald’s in Gartner’s top category, having scored in the top five for the last seven consecutive years. The masters category was created in 2015 to recognise sustained leadership in supply chains, and sits above the top 25 list.
“Unilever continues to lead the way with solid digital supply chain processes and operations, including leveraging automation, data science and machine learning,” Griswold said.
“The company also recognises the importance of improving digital-enabled manufacturing initiatives by using emerging technologies for maintenance and process control.”
