Kellogg Company is investing in a 2.7bn Egyptian pound (EGP) ($167m) noodle factory, as part of growth ambitions in the country.

Kellogg has entered into a joint venture with Tolaram Group to build the factory, which will generate 1,000 jobs.

The first and second phases of the project will see the companies collectively invest EGP810m ($50m), while total investment for the factory is expected to reach EGP2.7bn ($167m).

Kellogg estimates the noodle factory will create 1,000 direct and indirect job opportunities, in addition to 4,000 direct and indirect job opportunities with Kellogg across its manufacturing facilities, sales centre, and head office in Egypt.

Steven Cahillane, CEO of Kellogg Company, said: “Kellogg Noodles factory is poised to be one the largest noodle factories in the region that will meet local market demand and serve as an export hub for the region.”

Kellogg recently celebrated five years of growth in Egypt, with a total investment of EGP7.2bn ($446m) made since 2013.

The firm said it is exploring the possibility of increasing local investments and launching new production lines to meet consumer needs, as well as creating more job opportunities for Egyptian people.

As part of sustainability efforts in Egypt, Kellogg has also worked with 500 local farmers to incorporate their products into the firm’s supply chain, which has helped increase harvest yields by 30%.

“Expansion in emerging markets is one of the key focus areas for Kellogg,” said Cahillane.

“Our volume in emerging markets has increased by almost 80% in 2017 in comparison to the previous five years. Egypt is a growing market with a strong economy and is a proud part of our robust operations. We look forward to continuing to invest in Egypt and further deepen our strategic long-term partnerships, create more jobs locally as we aspire to nourish Egyptians and their families for many years to come.”
