An economic development council in the New Zealand region of Waikato is spearheading an initiative to ensure more contracts for goods and services go to businesses owned by Indigenous peoples.
Te Waka CEO Michael Bassett-Foss said the trend to “buy local” was already growing in importance for firms given the current economic climate, but the agency aimed to persuade them about the benefits of diversifying their supply base so it also benefited Māori and Pasifika people.
