J&J number one in Gartner's top healthcare supply chains

13 November 2020

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has held onto the top spot in Gartner’s 2020 Healthcare Supply Chain Top 25 due to innovative solutions during the pandemic.

J&J was number one for the second year, with CVS Health, Cleveland, McKesson and Banner Health making up the top five. Walgreens Boots Alliance is at number six.

Pfizer, which recently unveiled its own supply chain to distribute a Covid-19 vaccine, jumped four places to 15th.

The top firms were recognised for “successfully advancing healthcare by improving patient outcomes and controlling costs”.

Stephen Meyer, senior director analyst with the Gartner Supply Chain practice, said: “J&J set itself apart in its approach to supply chain innovation.

“While other supply chains made notable strides in individual projects and initiatives, J&J stood out in its commitment to finding novel supply chain solutions to the challenges of modern healthcare.”

Four new firms have joined the top 25 for 2020: Baylor Scott & White Health, Johns Hopkins Health System, Indiana University Healthy, Biogen.

The healthcare firms were ranked based on business performance and leadership in the healthcare supply chain community.

Meyer said: “2020 has proved to be a challenging year for healthcare and life sciences supply chains with the Covid-19 pandemic stressing many networks to their breaking point. All supply chains had to make significant changes to the way they worked, both tactically and strategically.”

Supply chain leaders have stood out by being able to adapt to the changing supply and demand caused by the pandemic, align the supply chain function to the business strategy, and “embrace disruption as an opportunity to drive their supply chains further”, according to Gartner.

Meyer said: “Successful supply chains don’t focus on just one strategy, but a portfolio of elements and solutions to protect their supply chains, including classic risk management, demand and supply visibility and agility.”

Mayo Clinic, Intermountain Health Care and Cardinal Health remain as Healthcare Supply Chain Top 25 Masters. To become a master firms must achieve a top five score in any seven of the last 10 years.
