Buyers get gongs in New Year Honours

Will Green is news editor of Supply Management
4 January 2021

Former commercial manager at Transport for London (TfL) Sharon Sear has been recognised in the New Year Honours.

Sear was handed a British Empire Medal (BEM) for her work sourcing personal protective equipment (PPE) for TfL staff during the pandemic.

She helped implement new procurement control methods for ordering stock and found new suppliers as demand for PPE ballooned.

Sear was spurred into action after noticing TfL had used up a year’s supply of PPE in just three months while usual suppliers had started redirecting stock to the NHS.

She obtained millions of face coverings and thousands of hand sanitisers but avoided conflict with the NHS by sourcing from different countries.

Sear, who was commercial manager at TfL until December 2020, said: “I am thrilled to be given this honour, and I see it not just an award for myself but in recognition of the collaborative effort between my team, colleagues in safety, health and environment and our supply chain. It’s great to know that our work helped keep my colleagues and our customers safe. It’s been a tough year but I’m proud to have helped TfL respond to the pandemic and I know my former colleagues will continue to keep this work going.”

Mathew Sullivan, material manager – uniform service and workshops at TfL, also received a BEM for his work storing and distributing PPE. At the peak of the first virus wave during the summer, he stored and distributed 1.5m face coverings across 48 hours.

Meanwhile, Daniel Bishop, delivery manager for the Type 31 frigate programme at the Ministry of Defence (MoD), was awarded an OBE for services to defence procurement.

And Courtney-Jayne Foley, project manager for PPE procurement at the MoD, was given an MBE for services to defence during the Covid-19 response.
