The first ships have docked at Kenya’s new Lamu Port, which the country hopes will open up its economy to international trade and aid post-Covid recovery.
The port is being built by the China Communications Construction Company and when complete the Shs310bn ($2.9bn) project will have 32 berths, making it the largest deep-water port in sub-Saharan Africa. The private sector is financing 29 of the berths.
