South Africa can only comply with the COP26 goal of “phasing down” coal power if it has sufficient resources to fund the change, according to the country’s environment minister.
Major economies should bear in mind that South Africa can only transition to low-carbon energy in “a manner that takes into consideration national interests and availability of resources”, said forestry, fisheries and environment minister Barbara Creecy.
