Pressure group Consumer NZ has urged the government to consider regulating wholesale supply to the country’s supermarkets or creating a state-owned wholesaler to head off food price rises.
The group said recent recommendations in a Commerce Commission grocery market study did not go far enough and relied too much on the willingness of the country’s major supermarket chains to supply competitors at a fair wholesale price.
