Barack Obama has become the new president of the US in what has been widely described as an historic election.

The democratic senator is the country's first black leader and his victory was met with an outpouring of high emotion in his hometown of Chicago. In a sober, but rallying speech to supporters in the city's Grant Park, Obama said: "This victory is not the change we seek, it is only the chance for us to make that change." Interestingly, after a day of political transformation in the US, stock markets have shown signs of improvement.

Will Obama's brand of "change" in the US affect business in the UK?

Could this be the beginning of the end of the economic downturn?
