Of the five events I have been to over the last two weeks, two themes have dominated discussions. The first issue, perhaps unsurprisingly, was the economy, but the second was sustainable procurement.

This may come as a bit of a shock, given that many people believe business packs away the sustainability soap box when the economy turns ugly. But not this time, if the experts are to be believed. Blake Lee-Harwood, a sustainability adviser says: "A survival strategy is going to have to be a sustainable strategy." He adds that procurement is the most important business function to delivering on the sustainable agenda.

Do you think survival strategies will depend on sustainability?
