Olympic profile

4 August 2009
It’s great news for procurement that the BBC has appointed a buyer as head of production for its coverage of the 2012 Olympics. Head of sourcing, Jamie Hindhaugh, will be responsible for coordinating the BBC's television, radio and online output for the London games and all its associated events. He describes the role as “massive”, but says he would not have secured it without his purchasing experience and strong internal relationships. "The commercial acumen needed for procurement gives you core skills you can transfer to a multitude of things." I think Hindhaugh’s experience is an example of what buyers can achieve and his appointment raises the profile of the profession. How transferable are procurement skills? What can buyers achieve when they foster the right relationships?
