At the CPO event I attended in Boston last week, there was a lot of talk about procurement’s role in change. Primarily that the profession is in such a good position to force transformation, and by bringing in new suppliers and ideas, it is something it is used to.
But the point was also made that many people have a strong resistance to any sort of change – the “not in my backyard” brigade.
Attitudes to change are very personal. If you are a CPO who enters a business and introduced sweeping transformation, does it make you less inclined toward change in the future because it will shake up the plans you have carefully crafted?
How can you spot when you have made the change from radical to NIMBY? How do you know when you are just preventing change for the sake of preserving the status quo, rather than the benefit of the business?
