This is a slow time for business in general and business magazines in particular. As most people head off on holiday and commercial activity slows down, there is a lot less happening (notwithstanding the public sector upheavals) and fewer people around to comment on it.
I am pleased, therefore, to break that usual high summer torpor and bring you our Battle of the Buyers
feature in the new issue of SM
Without giving it away, individual buyers responded to our offer earlier in the year to get involved. Twelve people took part and were divided into two teams. The aim was to test their buying skills; negotiation, influencing, leadership and organisation. They had a long list of hard-to-find things to buy and a few others to get for nothing. Accompanied by members of the SM
editorial team they were sent out into the unseasonably hot London day to procure the goods and “experiences” as cost-effectively as possible.
I’ll leave you to read the article to find out what happened. But there were some interesting observations on the whole event. First, the hugely infectious enthusiasm the participants brought with them. Each team really wanted to win. And both did a great job exceeding by a long way the demanding tasks set for them. Second, I was really pleased to hear how supportive the individuals’ employers had been allowing them to spend the day doing this.
As we now have a cupboard full of stuff, we are going to run an e-auction with BravoSolution and the proceeds will go to Great Ormond Street Hospital
charity. Click here for details of how you can take part in the e-auction
Lastly, I’d like to offer my huge thanks to judges Dick Russill, Andy Davies and Jenny Radcliffe who played their roles with tremendous aplomb.
is itself on hols. We will continue to bring you our daily online news updates and blogs, and the next issue is out on 2 September.
