Driving up the profile of procurement

4 February 2010
Volkswagen’s recent victory in this year’s Dakar rally (now being raced through South America because of the safety and politics in Africa) was surprising. Not due to the automotive company’s second consecutive victory and one-two-three podium finish, but because of the person selected to chosen to celebrate and announce the victory. The man in question? Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz, member of Volkswagen’s board of management for procurement (that’s him in the white shirt in the middle on top of the car). “I’m incredibly proud of our team. It’s stunning what the drivers, co-drivers and the entire team have achieved on every single day of the Dakar rally. With this one-two-three triumph Volkswagen Motorsport even surpassed its own lofty goals,” he said. It’s not entirely clear why Señor Sanz is the man to talk up the victory and offer his congratulations to the winners or what his role was in the triumph (even though we have seen the importance of good procurement in motorsport), but he should be lauded for raising the profile of the profession.
