How many of your colleagues made it into the office today?
It’s not such an odd question, as today has been designated National Sick Day.
The first Monday of February is the most common day for people to call in ill, due to mounting credit card bills, poor weather and a long time to wait until the next bank holiday.
A survey conducted by HR software firm Kronos found 20 per cent of employees have called in ill when they aren’t (I thought it would have been higher). The most common activities for this “sick” day include staying in bed (39 per cent), meeting friends and relatives (35 per cent) and watching TV (26 per cent).
Reasons for taking the day off included 57 per cent of people feeling stressed and worn out, 22 per cent when they had run out of official holiday and 9 per cent wanting to enjoy the sunny weather – although not much chance of that happening today.
Suggestions to tackle these absences included “summer Fridays”, with employees given the chance to work shorter hours on a Friday if time is made up during the week, more paid leave and more “duvet days”, where time can be taken off at very short notice.
On cold winter mornings it can be very appealing to roll over when the alarm goes off and go back to sleep, before enjoying a day in front of the TV and fire. What are your tips for tackling temptation?
