The CSR bandwagon

22 February 2010
The market for corporate social responsibility (CSR) consultancy has grown rapidly in the past five years. Ethical Performance produces a free searchable online directory of CSR advisory firms. The 2010 version of the guide contains details of 685 organisations and individuals offering such a service, compared to the 227 included in the first published edition, which was launched in 2005. Much of the growth in consultancy is taking place in regions “catching up” on CSR, such as the US and Asia, although the consultancies themselves are offering more global services. But is this growth the result of an increasing demand for CSR consultancy, or is it simply opportunistic firms and individuals jumping on the bandwagon, trying to make “easy” money? The market will determine that conclusion, and we shall see how many of these businesses are still around in another five years.
