Put up or shut up

I attended a regular local gathering of a LinkedIn group a few nights ago. A couple of conversations made me reflect on how often we just put up with the unacceptable.
 The first thing to happen isn’t uncommon at a networking event – that’s a person walking around the room, business card in hand, thrusting them at everyone they meet. I haven’t yet met anyone who appreciates this behaviour, nor anyone who finds it effective in building relationships. But we often put up with it and accept it. Well, I must have been in one of those moods last night and I declined his offer. The person looked stunned. I said I’d prefer to wait until I knew his name, what he did and had explored how we may be of assistance to each other before we considered exchanging cards. The second occasion was a conversation I had with somebody who worked for an SME, who said they were ready to hit their counterpart from a corporate, because of his insistent bullying in their supplier relationship. This type of behaviour isn’t uncommon if other recent tweets are anything to go by. The excuses for accepting this behaviour were many - and I’m not wishing to undermine these - but acceptance reinforces this behaviour. There will always be reasons to accept the unacceptable. Unfortunately we’ll continue to get it until we start to take action and reject the unwanted.
