You probably weren’t looking for an example of subcontracting going wrong, but just in case, here’s one that descended into drama and crisis. The relationship between a supplier, purchasing body and a group of residents hit an all-time low in Kent when angry residents took a worker hostage in a war over renovations. The battle was with contractors who had been appointed by Affinity Sutton Housing Association to update residents’ kitchens. Resident Linda Goldsmith, unhappy with the workmanship and time it was taking to complete the job, refused to let one of the carpenters leave when he said he needed to go out to pick up a part. Instead, she captured the worker with the help of her neighbours. Residents surrounded the carpenter’s exit until the site manager was called and the issue was resolved.
