Come dine with me

Alison Smith, procurement professional and life coach and Supply Management guest bloggerWith the CIPS Annual Dinner one week today, and given Meryl’s blog earlier this week, I thought I’d think about my ‘strategy’ for the night. There are a number of different approaches I could take - although perhaps not mutually exclusive:
  • Talk to no-one
  • Talk to friends
  • Talk to colleagues
  • Talk to clients
  • Talk to people I’ve met before, not already covered in the above
  • Talk to people I’ve “met” via social media
  • Talk to people others introduce me to
  • Talk to people I’ve identified as interesting
  • Talk to people I’ve identified as potential clients
  • Talk to people I don’t know
And once that’s decided do I stay sitting at the table and let people find me? Or do I go on walk about? And do I set any further goals about telling people about what I’m doing these days or not? It’s no different from any other networking opportunity and I must admit I prefer walking around and seeing who I bump into. Although this year my increased activity on social media does mean it would be great to meet those I’ve exchanged ideas with. I’m also going to set myself a target to just introduce myself to someone I’ve never met and see what happens (I’ll let you know how I get on). For me the key is having a strategy and not just being on the receiving end of others strategies – especially if their only strategy is to sell to me. What’s your strategy?
