When the office is home sweet home

Feeling unproductive today? Why not just go home? According to students around the world surveyed for Cisco, 23 per cent think when they start working, it won’t be necessary for them to go to an office every day and they will be more productive operating at home or remotely. A further 47 per cent think they will only have to go in for “special meetings”. And just 31 per cent think going into an office will help them make decisions more effectively. This compares to 59 per cent of bosses also surveyed who said they will expect employees to turn up everyday. This might sound like a good thing for businesses, removing all those costly physical assets like buildings and office equipment – even if there will be a consequent rise in spending on infrastructure and gadgets to provide remote access. But this poses a few issues for procurement managers. How can you do effective stakeholder engagement if you – or indeed, the stakeholders – are not in the office? What will be the best way to share experience and best practice if you don’t have regular contact with colleagues? And how do you manage the clash between those that expect office work, and those that don’t? Answers on a ‘postcard’ below please.
