To save money in football, buy chickens not turkeys

The Premier League title race was thrown open again this week thanks to Wigan’s victory over Manchester United. But off the field, there were some key developments of interest to procurement professionals. In a story that is a must for those who enjoy egg-related puns, the Daily Mail this week reported Fulham has purchased 12 chickens in an effort to save £5,000 a year on catering costs. The hens, which will be cooped up at the club’s training facilities in Surrey, have been brought in to provide the 90 eggs a week that the team gets through. While Fulham expect to save money through its poultry purchase, my own club Liverpool may have finally realised they have bought a couple of turkeys. The Merseyside club sacked director of football Damien Comolli with the team having failed to get full value for money out of a £35 million outlay for Andy Carroll (currently worked out at £5 million per goal) and further big spending on Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing. As Comolli probably realises - and many procurement professionals also understand - high costs and low returns are not a successful mix. It made me think about who has provided the best value for money this season. Let me know your thoughts below (bonus points if you can provide a equation to prove it).
