A lifetime of achievement

6 June 2012
Rebecca Ellinor, managing editor, Supply ManagementThis issue marks the 80th anniversary of CIPS. It charts the history of the institute from the point at which seven people around a table decided it was a good idea to establish a British association, to the 66,000 members it has today in 150 countries. It also takes a more focused look at achievements in the past five years, including
the setting up of a Middle East and North Africa office, the establishment of CIPS Africa and the introduction of many new services and resources for members, including CIPS Intelligence and the sustainability review tool. Meanwhile, in an interview marking three years since David Noble became CEO of CIPS, he says: “There has never been a better time to be in the profession as CEOs are listening,” and calls for all members to get involved in the institute’s Generation Y initiative. In addition to features reviewing the past eight decades, CIPS has contributed a piece on its 80:20 Vision, which looks ahead to the next two. It expects that risk management, flexibility to respond to shifting demands, use of technology and attracting talent will all continue to be major preoccupations of the buyers of the future. This issue also includes the next in our series of articles supporting this year’s presidential theme – to make procurement the profession of choice. We speak to six organisations to find out how they have established graduate programmes and what difference they make. And after another successful Pan African Conference and Awards in Johannesburg, we bring you an update on procurement in the region. Back in the UK, details of the 4 October conference in London are now finalised with CPOs from Diageo, Philips, the Royal Mint, Football Association and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games speaking.
