Celebrating success

9 October 2012
Rebecca Ellinor, managing editor, Supply ManagementCongratulations to all those who clinched a CIPS Supply Management Award at the ceremony last month. If you’re wondering what they did that was so special, read our case studies and
see pictures from the night. As ever, the standard of entries was high. Scores of submissions came from small businesses, giant multinationals and everything in between. And across all sectors. A robust judging process – which has ensured these awards maintain the highest possible standards of integrity – resulted in an impressive shortlist and list of winners that celebrates the achievements of the entire profession. Overall winner NATO changed military policy, achieved accolades from stakeholders and raised
the profile of procurement even higher at the organisation. As they tell me, the team took 15 months to ensure they were submitting a quality entry. We know that scooping one of these awards opens doors to individuals and procurement teams, so it’s worth the effort. If you didn’t win this time, look out for more information about how to submit a winning entry early in 2013. Meanwhile, procurement has been in the UK headlines for the wrong reasons. As we went to
press, news came that the Department of Transport has cancelled the current competition for the West Coast Main Line railway franchise and put the brakes on all others currently being conducted, over concerns about the procurement process. Three officials involved in the failed process were then suspended while the facts could be established. The department also confirmed it will pay back all costs incurred by bidding parties. We want procurement making national and international headlines for its achievements. As incoming CIPS president Paula Gildert told me last month: “We have some fabulous stories to tell, but often we are not the ones telling them or at least not in a way that grabs attention.” Let’s change that.
